Planning your toddler’s photography session

Turning tantrums into triumphs: Tips for your toddler’s session

Ever seen a frown transform into sheer delight during a portrait session? At Blush Photo, we’re all about turning tantrums into unforgettable smiles! Over the years, I have photographed hundreds of toddler sessions with many different personalties. Every session is different, and that is what keeps it fun! Some kiddos come in ready to play and smile, and others can be shy and unsure of the new environment. Both reactions are totally normal, it is part of my job as a photographer to help your toddler feel at ease. Worried about how your baby will react to their portrait session? I’d love to share some things that I have learned along the way to help make your session a success.

Here are a few keys to sidestepping those meltdowns and making magic happen:

Stay playful! Toddlers respond best when it feels like fun. – Our sessions are light hearted and fun. Each session begins with a little downtime for your child to take in the scenery of the studio and warm up to me. Once they are comfortable, we can start with their individual portraits. If your baby is feeling a bit shy, no worries, we can do family portraits first to ensure they are feeling secure. Your baby will feed off of your energy, if you are relzaxed and having fun, they will too.

Pre-planning questionnaire: This important part of the session happens before you even walk through the door! In our pre-planning questionnaire, you will answer questions about your todder’s personality, share their happiest time of day and favorite music to play during their session. Some babies do better with a calm and quiet atmosphere, while others prefer music and lots of silly energy. It is great to know that ahead of time so I can make the studio as welcoming as possible.

Toddler Snacks: a tasty little secret. Snacks can be a great motivator for a baby or toddler! When choosing snacks for your session, choose snacks that are neat and will not melt in their hands or on their faces. Puffs, cheerios, cheese and goldfish some favorites. Check out this list of healthy snacks for your toddler for some great ideas.

Are toddler sessions a bit unpredictable? Absolutely, but they are also filled with lots of belly laughter and adorable moments! Capturing the joy of childhood is what we do, turning life’s whimsical moments into timeless portraits right here in our Cuyahoga Falls studio. I can’t wait to share these memories with you.
